The power of our farm-to-fork view of agriculture manifests itself in many ways. One way many of our Land O’Lakes, Inc. member-owners benefit from our size and businesses is the Purina® Milk Premium program. Through the program, members who feed their herds a certain amount of Purina® products are eligible for a monthly rebate check based on the hundred-weight of milk they produce.
This year, the program is getting even better with the addition of Purina® young-animal feed.
The young-animal component of the premium is still being rolled out to members. Members who sign up and transition their calves to a full-potential milk diet consisting of Land O Lakes® Cow’s Match® Calf Milk Replacer, Land O Lakes® Pasteurized Milk Balancer®, Land O Lakes® Jersey Blend Milk Replacer® or Purina® Pasteurized Milk Balancer® and AMPLI-CALF® Starter and AMPLI-CALF® Grower, will receive a rebate of $10 per calf they’re raising on Purina® products at the end of the year.
Glenda Gehl, director of developmental services with the Land O’Lakes Member Relations team, says this offers members a good reason to try the Purina® AMPLI-CALF® program.
“We are hearing from our members that they firmly believe Purina® is a leader in young-animal nutrition,” Glenda says. “There are a lot of members who are open to trying Purina®, and this is a nice way to get in the door and get to know the Purina® brand.”
Mike Hanson, a member with a roughly 120-cow dairy herd in Pennington County, Minnesota, is one of the earliest members to join the new young-animal feed offering. He has used Purina® feed before, and was attracted to the program partially because of that history.
“I’ve been down to the research farm (the Purina Animal Nutrition Center) in St. Louis, so I’ve seen the research they do. That was one of the things that convinced me,” Mike says.
He says that the annual rebate per calf is good incentive, but he’s also interested in using Purina® AMPLI-CALF® to get his heifers off to the right start unlock his herd’s full potential.
“We’re interested in getting our heifers to calf at age two, and it all starts the day they’re born with the right feed program,” he says. “We also show cows–my wife and son are both judges. We want our heifers to grow well and look good.”
Glenda notes that the program marks the first collaboration between her Member Relations team and Purina® to engage with members and discover what kind of incentive would interest them in Purina® feed.
“It’s very exciting for Member Relations to be able to co-market this with Purina® and bring together, for the members, the benefits what Land O’Lakes has to offer,” she says.
It’s also something that doesn’t happen at every co-op.
“This is a differentiating value that we bring members. If other co-ops tried to do something like this, they would have to find an external partner,” she explains. “At Land O’Lakes, we have the ability to walk to the office next door and have a conversation about putting a program together that will benefit our members.”
